Latest Updates from Our Project:

Funded! And Stretch Goals!
over 3 years ago – Sun, Nov 29, 2020 at 03:14:49 PM

HORNSAW HEROES!

We've all been feeling this build and build over the past week, but it's finally happened! We've gained enough XP and gone up a level!

I mean, that is to say,

This project has funded!!

You probably heard Travis cheering around the world!

Thanks to your support, Scarred Lands: Dead Man's Rust has gained enough experience to take it to the next level! Let's see what other encounters we can overcome or new abilities we may unlock (or, what Stretch Goals we may hit, if I slip out of my point of reference for a minute...)

As we increase the overall funding and support for the project, we’re able to add additional resources to the project, expand the rewards listed, and add in new offers and opportunities. Each Stretch Goal will have a target that, once reached, will add a project to the reward list. We will continue to build on this list when we achieve these targets during the campaign. Whenever we achieve a stretch goal, the image will be updated to reflect the achievement.

If you're like me, most of the gaming you've done this year has been online, either over Discord and/or with the help of a VTT platform. Many of the goals for this project will seek to make online play a little easier, providing resources to bring this adventure to life!

At $16,000 in funding – VTT Tokens & Map Pack: Journey to Broadreach Horizon – Digital assets will be created to support online play for 1-2 encounters in Dead Man’s Rust, including location maps and necessary character and creature tokens. All backers receiving the Dead Man’s Rust PDF will automatically have this digital pack added to their rewards list.

At $17,000 in funding – Backer T-Shirt! – A Scarred Lands: Dead Man’s Rust-themed Kickstarter Backer shirt will be hosted on Onyx Path’s Redbubble store for a limited time. Only backers will be notified when the shirt becomes available for purchase.

At $18,000 in funding – VTT Tokens & Map Pack: Dwarven Dilemmas – Digital assets will be created to support online play for 1-2 encounters in Dead Man’s Rust, including location maps and necessary character and creature tokens. All backers receiving the Dead Man’s Rust PDF will automatically have this digital pack added to their rewards list.

So exciting! Some digital asset packs that will be added to your rewards FOR FREE, and an opportunity to show of your Scarred Lands fashion sense with the creation of a Dead Man's Rust-themed shirt! I only wish it had Scarred Lands locations listed as tour dates on the back!

We've made the first step in our journey - and it was an amazing first step! But, there more titanspawn to defeat over the remainder of this campaign! Let's continue to rally and work together to see where this journey may take us!

I've taken a level of ranger. Let's see how this goes.

The Gentleman visits Ghelspad
over 3 years ago – Sat, Nov 28, 2020 at 10:40:52 AM

Hey there, Heroes of the Hornsaw,

Today I'm going to share a video from one of Onyx Path's Developer trio, Matthew Dawkins. For those who may still be on the fence about journey into the Scarred Lands (Is that even possible! Join up already!), here's Matthew in his guise as the Gentleman Gamer, sharing an overview on the campaign world that is the Scarred Lands.

And, if you want to hear Matthew in action, you can listen to the latest episode from the amazing Actual Play masters, Red Moon Roleplaying. Click this link and give it a listen:

Scarred Lands 5E: Dead Man's Rust 01

In this episode, they are happy to welcome you to the Scarred Lands as The Gentleman Gamer Matthew Dawkins leads Klara Herbøl, Hjalmar and Craig through a part of "Dead Man's Rust", a our mega-adventure for Scarred Lands.

In this episode, Terfin (Klara Herbøl), the hollow legionnaire paladin, has ventured out to the Hornsaw Forest to find a contingent of missing soldiers of her kind. To her aid she has the stranded slitherin pirate Cutter Var (Craig Austin) and their local guide, an ironbred bard calling himself Shag-mane. With the living, corrupted forest presenting mortal danger at every tree, rock and twisted animal noise, the slightest misstep would have them all perish.

Thanks to everyone who's already joined in and helped us on our cause! We're already 95% to our funding target and likely to crossover and make this project a reality any day now! So, please spread the word where you can, and invite others to join in and explore the dangers of the Hornsaw.

On Monday, I'll be posting our next manuscript preview, where you'll get more info on the forest and the  30 (!) clans of elves that dwell within. Plus dwarves too! Don't forget them! So much packed into the next chapter.

Backers will be able to read the entire manuscript before we conclude this campaign. And even better, you can start playing right away as well! Believe me, there's enough information in this book to play for a long time!

See you on Monday!

Friday Pathcasts
over 3 years ago – Fri, Nov 27, 2020 at 11:55:56 AM

Hey there, Heroes of the Hornsaw!

We're over 90% funded! Getting closer! And we've still got more than 3 weeks to go!

Black Friday James

I've got two Friday things for you today.

BLACK FRIDAY

First up, I'm going to break all my rules and steer money away from the campaign for a second. Onyx Path is participating in DriveThruRPG's massive Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale, which has just started and runs for almost the next 4 days.

It’s time again for DriveThruRPG’s Black Friday/Cyber Monday Sale!

Nearly every PDF in the Onyx Path catalogue is on sale, between 20% and 40% off! Products from across their community content programs — Storypath Nexus, Canis Minor, and Slarecian Vault — are also on sale, making a total of nearly 700 Onyx Path products in the sale!

Now, that includes a couple titles that may seem familiar -

These PDF titles are currently offered as Add On options for this campaign at costs that make sense for  Onyx Path during a Kickstarter Campaign. But, for the next 3+ days, they're actually cheaper as part of the DriveThruRPG Black Friday sale.

So, from me to you in a whisper, if you were going to add on those two PDFs (and just the PDFs, not the hardcover books), then pick them up this weekend as part of the sale. That'll take money away from our funding progress, but you guys are all Scarred Lands and Onyx Path supporters and I want to make sure that we're not sneaking one past you!

Also - there's a lot of cool Scarred Lands community content from the Slarecian Vault, so check that stuff out too!

PATHCAST FRIDAY

Secondly, if you're like me, Fridays mean a new episode of the Onyx Pathcast. That's the weekly podcast that's home to Onyx Path's developer trio - Eddy Webb, Matthew Dawkins, and Dixie Cochran.

Except this time, I'm not going to tell you about a new episode, I'm going to tell you about two previous episodes that you may want to listen to!

So, when you've got time to give these a listen, go back in time and get some Scarred Lands tidbits!

And check out that Black Friday sale if you are looking to bolster your digital rpg library. And don't forget to spread the word about this campaign - we're so close and hopefully going to fund soon! Let's keep at it and gain a level!

Sneak Peek: Fox Clan Elves
over 3 years ago – Thu, Nov 26, 2020 at 10:54:58 AM

Hey there, Heroes of the Hornsaw,

I know many of the Onyx Path team and lots of our American backers may currently be preoccupied with food and family - and that distraction presents the perfect opportunity to sneak a preview of the Fox Clan Elves out to you.

Let's just keep this between us!

Villages of the Broadreach

The villages of the Broadreach elves are as unique as the clans themselves. The architecture of each village range from practical to spiritual and everything in between. Each clan and village is its own culture. As such, engaging with members of each clan requires different manners and diplomatic skills.

Broadreach elves from different clans constantly patrol the wood’s borders and are aware of trespassers, hunters, cultists, and survivalists intent on exploring the region. A successful DC 15 Intelligence (History) check reveals that the elves’ tattoos indicate which clan they belong to and how old they are: young elves join clans on a trial basis and receive temporary tattoos; older elves with more elaborate, permanent tattoos enjoy a higher-ranked position in the community.

Fox Clan takes to the trees!

Fox Clan

Medium village, chaotic good

Population: 623

Area of Influence: Southern Central River Province

Government: Hunter Clan, Representative Council Meritocracy

Leader: Mother Zinda (she/her, NG, Broadreach Elf, hunter clan elder)

Commerce: Produce treated furs and leathers to trade for refined ores and worked stone

Signature Tattoo(s): Masters of stealth and subterfuge, Fox Clan utilizes tattoos in a very practical method in conjunction with symbolic meaning. “Leaf’s Shadow” tattoos that give the appearance of gaps in foliage are common. The most dominant combination of designs combines glove and sock like full coverage pieces on the hands and permanent cut-crease eyeshadow to mimic the markings of their patron animal.

Folkways: The customary greeting involves a tight forearm grasp with left hand open and extended followed by a tight embrace with the left hand passing over the length of the belt. This is to either show a lack of weapons or a trust that those weapons will not be used against one another.

Maintaining intelligence on the movements of all things concerning their territory is an essential part of Clan Fox doctrine. They believe to ensure the safety of their lands; they must also gather information on friend and foe alike. This has led to a small ritual amongst young scouts looking to display their prowess and gain acceptance from the veterans of the village, commonly called “The Proving”

Once a scout has reached the age of maturity within the clan, they set upon their Proving with the single statement of a veteran. This clan elder will simply say a bordering clan’s name and a unique item. This may be ‘the matron’s quilt’ or ‘an arrow broken in three parts’. Once spoken, the young scout has three days to acquire the item from the stated clan’s village and bring it to the veteran. They then have three days to return it undetected, and preferably without the item ever being missed. Success means a celebration and recognition as a true Clan Fox scout. Failure is met with consoling encouragement and assurances that after another year of training they will achieve victory.

To hunt your quarry, you must first know your quarry. The elves of Clan Fox take this philosophy to be paramount amongst all others. Excelling at camouflage, stealth, and awareness, Clan Fox elves are prized as scoutmasters and intelligence gatherers. Among the Hunter Clans, they have no equal in their hit-and-run, ambush, and guerilla tactics. The fight is almost assuredly decided before Clan Fox hunters even show themselves to their enemy.

Allies: Eagle Clan, Scorpion Clan, Wolf Clan, and Wolverine Clan

Enemies: Lizard Clan, Undead of Glivid-Autel

Notable NPCs

Matron Zinda. As the foremost Ranger within the Clan, Matron Zinda leads the clan scouts tactically and the village morally. She is not only the youngest of those claiming the Matron title within the clans, but also one of the few non-Druidic practitioners.

Kaiarataki Kiazi(he/him, LG, Broadreach Elf, hunter clan scout) Kiazi takes the role of training the young scouts in the ways of ranging and stealth. His dedication to his wards is almost that of a parent, taking great pride in their successes and personal responsibility in their shortcomings.

Story Hooks

Travelers in Fox Clan territory find the clan to be quick to welcome and accept guests, a rarity within the vicious Broadreach Horizon. Truth be told, it only seems this way as the guest only receives such a welcome after they have been observed for some time by the clan scouts. It’s the best kept secret of the clan, open and welcoming while being some of the most scrutinizing. Those within that Clan will freely approach capable travelers with confidence knowing the scouts are keeping them safe and only allowing those worthy to enter the village.

Lost Scouts. Ten days ago, young Temba (they/them, CG, Broadreach elf, hunter clan scout) left to return an artifact to the neighboring clan’s matron. Temba is considered the shining pinnacle of scouts within their generation. Taking this into account, the veterans are concerned. Complicating matters, most Fox Clan veterans are engaged in a grand sortie to secure the Borders and cannot be diverted from their task to search for the missing young scout. The truth is that the young Temba stole a sacred knife from Clan Bear. This knife is possessed by a spirit that drives any wielder outside of the clan to seek the worthiest opponent. The challenge before the party is to get the knife from the youth without killing them. Should they achieve this and return the knife to Clan Bear and Temba to Clan Fox, they may receive boon from both.

Agreeing to search on behalf of the Matron of the clan, the characters are provided with scouting reports on access points to Glivid-Autel and information on the undead patrols to the region.

Fey Ancestry. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.

Trance. Elves don’t need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day. (The Common word for such meditation is “trance.”) While meditating, you can dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive through years of practice. After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep.

Keen hearing and sight. The scout has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or sight.

Magic Tattoo - Eye of Night Sigil This tattoo of an eye extends the hunter clan scout’s darkvision to 60 ft.

Spellcasting. The Scout is a 1st-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 11, +3 to hit with spell attacks). The Scout has following druid spells prepared:

Cantrips (at will): druidcraft, primal savagery

1st level (3 slots): longstrider, faerie fire, animal friendship

ACTIONS

Multiattack. The scout makes three melee attacks or three ranged attacks.

Scimitar. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) slashing damage.

Longbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 150/600 ft., one target. Hit: 6(1d8 + 2) piercing damage.

I'll be able to share more about all of the Broadreach elven clans communities, as well as a section of the appendix dealing with the stat information for beast clan members, hunter clan scounts, plant clan artisans, rogue clan elders, and so much more! Plus dwarves! I didn't even mention the dwarves!

Anyway, for those who are participating in the festivities of the turkey clan, I hope you're keeping safe and can find some respite during this long holiday weekend. And, for the rest of us, I look forward to watching this campaign continue to grow and gain XP! We're so close to funding and levelling up!

Don't forget to spread the word where you can (especially on Zoom family calls this weekend!) and share on your social media when possible! Together, we'll solve the riddle of steel and bring this adventure to the world!

Dead Man's Rust in the Scarred Lands
over 3 years ago – Wed, Nov 25, 2020 at 06:59:38 AM

Hello Hornsaw Heroes!

We're starting our third day (really, we're still in our first 48 hours, but I'll leave all the dates and math to someone else...) and getting ever closer to funding this project! We've not got 200+ backers and are more than 80% funded!

I feel like I'm adding up the XP hoping to get to 2nd level!

As noted yesterday, Travis Legge, Onyx Path's Scarred Lands developer, has been making the rounds, helping our adventuring party grow in number! Check out these interviews with Travis about the project:

307 RPG Podcast - Episode 111

First up, the team at the 307 RPG Podcast talk with Travis about Scarred Lands and Dead Man's Rust on Episode 111: <Click this Link to Listen>

A Bunch of Gamers Episode 14

And then, A Bunch of Gamers have Travis on their latest GM Talks podcast about this mega-adventure and other fun topics! <Click this Link to Listen>

After focusing tight on this campaign and the Dead Man's Rust mega-adventure, let's broaden our spotlight a bit and start looking at the Scarred Lands setting overall. There are some really great videos going over the setting and Onyx Path's latest version in particular. If you're new to the Scarred Lands, or just want something to share to help others understand this awesome setting, check out this two part overview from Jorphdan:

RALLY THE TROOPS!

We're making great progress, but I'd really love to see if we can fund or get really close before all of our American friends start their big Thanksgiving feasts (and subsequent tryptophan-induced naps!). Please spread the word where you can - share on your social media and (safely) in your social circles! We're getting really close - let's see if we can get a few more XP and take it to the next level!
